AGE-WELL EPIC Program

Early Professionals, Inspired Careers

The AGE-WELL EPIC Program will expose Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP include trainees and research staff such as undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, research assistants, technicians, and summer students) to multi-disciplinary research environments, industry, and community partners. Through experiential learning opportunities, including courses, workshops, collaboration, and mentorship, the program emphasizes the development of skills, ideas, teamwork, and relationship-building that are the building blocks of a successful career.

Elements of EPIC

The Four Core Competencies

THE EPIC ADVANTAGE - BUILDING BLOCKS OF SUCCESS
Knowledge and Technology Exchange & Exploitation: Accelerate innovation and commercialization. Join our Knowledge Community and help establish Canada as a global leader in the development of technologies for healthy aging. Learn more about business planning, project management, “soft” skills training, post-discovery commercialization, knowledge dissemination and mobilization.

Transdisciplinary Research Skills: Build research capacity and expertise to achieve excellence in research. Transcend disciplinary boundaries to think and problem-solve creatively. Explore experiential design, co-production, and the importance of user research.

Ethics: Close the gap between innovative technologies and practice. Understand the ethical, privacy, and security factors that obstruct market access and success. How does big data affect your research?

Understanding Impact: Drive practical solutions. Know the market, end user, and the relationship between technology and the built environment. Learn more about health technology assessment, technology evaluation, and the social, economic, environmental, and commercial implications of your work.

Be at the EPICentre of Innovation

We provide unparalleled world-class training and mentorship in unique, applied environments in the four core competency areas. The program is structured to build capacity across all four areas and provide the opportunity for HQP to explore, in depth, a core competency of their choice.

EPIC training may include experiential learning activities such as internships and exchanges, mentorship by subject experts and stakeholders,  AGE-WELL programming such as journal clubs, summer institutes, and seminars, as well as a plethora of trainee-identified activities.

Be EPIC – Earn the AGE-WELL Innovators of Tomorrow Certificate

Successfully developing and exploiting new technologies is a highly demanding process that requires well-rounded HQP that are able to work effectively within a transdisciplinary environment. The AGE-WELL EPIC program will train HQP to be industry, academic, and community leaders in the development and introduction of technology to the health system and marketplace.

AGE-WELL HQP, including the members of our Affiliates Program, are invited to complete the program to earn the AGE-WELL Innovators of Tomorrow Certificate and showcase their transferable skills and comprehensive knowledge of the field.

All funded AGE-WELL HQP are automatically enrolled in our EPIC training program and must earn the certificate within 1 calendar year.

What Does It Take To Be EPIC?

Program requirements differ by academic status and affiliation with AGE-WELL and are inherently flexible so HQP can participate in both relevant and interesting activities while building capacity across the four core competencies.
