SUMMARY:EPIC-AT and AGE-WELL Public Webinar Series: Housing as Key Determinant of Health for Older LGBT Canadians
DESCRIPTION:While housing is generally regarded as a key determinant of health around the world\, the unique housing needs and realities of older lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, and transgender (LGBT) Canadians are less well understood. Based on a national\, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded research grant\, this presentation focuses on the key issues facing older LGBT Canadians in accessing safe\, affordable\, and affirming housing. The findings presented will draw from a national online survey\, focus groups\, and a review of the literature. Recommendations will be offered on how best to meet the needs of this population.  \nWHEN: June 7\, 2023 at 1:00 to 2:00 pm ET \nSPEAKER: Dr. Jacquie Gahagan (they/them)\, Associate Vice-President\, Research Mount Saint Vincent University \n Bio: Jacquie Gahagan (they/them) is a Medical Sociologist and Associate Vice President\, Research\, at Mount Saint Vincent University\, Halifax\, Nova Scotia. Jacquie’s longstanding health equity-focused program of research examines the ways in which existing health policies\, programs\, and interventions do or do not meet the needs of equity-deserving populations. Jacquie’s funded research studies include an examination of access to safe and affirming health care and housing among 2SLGBTQ+ populations\, access to STBBI testing innovation\, plasma apheresis donations among gay men and transgender populations\, and access to post-secondary education among former youth in care\, among other projects.
